1. Digital competence of Vietnamese citizens: An application of digcomp framework and the role of individual factors

   Assessment of digital competence for citizens could support the Education Action plan at a national level, a regional level, or even at a global level to enhance the digital skills and competence gap for work and life for digital transformation. This study applies the DigComp framework through a self-administered online survey to 723 citizens in Vietnam, using a sequential exploratory mixed methods research design. Data were analysed using factor analysis, standard descriptive statistics, and simple regression methods, followed by qualitative content analysis from interviews with ten respondents and a focus group discussion with eight stakeholders on digital competence. The results confirmed the validity of the DigComp framework for measuring the digital competence of Vietnamese citizens. Overall, the proficiency level of the 723 surveyed Vietnamese citizens falls between basic and intermediate levels, being more advanced in areas in information and data literacy and communication and collaboration, compared to digital content creation, safety, and problem solving. The results further showed that male citizens with a higher education level, working in the public sector, or living in province with high provincial digital transformation index rankings perceived themselves to be more digital competent than females with a lower educational level, working in the private sector, or living in the province with low provincial digital transformation index rankings. To improve citizens’ digital competence, training should be designed that considers not only citizens’ digital competence profiles but also their individual characteristics.

2. When young customers co-create value of AI-powered branded app: the mediating role of perceived authenticity

   Artificial intelligence (AI) allows the brand to co-create value with young customers through mobile apps. However, as many brands claim that their mobile apps are using the most updated AI technology, young customers face app fatigue and start questioning the authenticity of this touchpoint. This paper aims to study the mediating effect of authenticity for the value co-creation of AI-powered branded applications. Drawing from regulatory engagement theory, this study conceptualize authenticity as the key construct in customers’ value experience process, which triggers customer value co-creation. Two scenario-based online experiments are conducted to collect data from 444 young customers. Data analysis is performed using ANOVA and Process Hayes. The results reveal that perceived authenticity is an important mediator between media richness (chatbot vs AI text vs augmented reality) and value co-creation. There is no interaction effect of co-brand fit (high vs low) and source endorsement (doctor vs government) on the relationship between media richness and perceived authenticity, whereas injunctive norms (high vs low) strengthen this relationship. The finding provides insights for marketing managers on engaging young customers suffering from app fatigue. Authenticity holds the key to young customers’ technological perceptions. This research highlights the importance of perceived authenticity in encouraging young customers to co-create value. Young customers consider authenticity as a motivational force experience that involves customers through the app’s attributes (e.g. media richness) and social standards (e.g. norms), rather than brand factors (e.g. co-brand fit, source endorsement).

3. Interlocking boards and firm outcomes: a review

   This paper explores the relationship between board interlocks and firm outcomes by reviewing the most recent peer-reviewed articles examining this research theme. A systematic and bibliometric methodology of assessing 369 peer-reviewed articles from the Web of Science (WoS) database was applied. The study also leverages key R-packages litsearchr and Bibliometrix software to enhance the descriptive and thematic literature analysis to identify gaps and opportunities for new research. This study confirms a rapid increase in articles on this thematic area, over the last decade, with increasing collaboration occurring among researchers in the United States, Europe, China, South Korea and India. Four core research clusters are identified. The first and largest cluster links interlocked directors to issues related to corporate governance and firm outcomes. The second cluster links social network theory, interlocking directorates and firm outcomes. Smaller emerging research clusters include topics related to ownership structure, board size, political connectedness and impacts on firm outcomes. The final cluster examines the influence of board interlocks on market value and firm innovation. Interlocked directors can have both positive and negative impacts on a wide variety of firm outcomes. This study places great interest in the selection of new directors, ensuring that the selection has aligned with the needs and interests of the company and disclosures of potential competing interests are declared and considered. Equally important are the governance practices used to monitor directors’ behavior and to protect the interest of shareholders and the firm. This is particularly relevant in the internal appointment of interlocked directors to critical positions, such as audit committees or instances where interlocked directors may simultaneously hold CEO or executive leadership positions in other companies. This paper examines the board interlocks literature related to firm outcomes. Additionally, this review identifies several topics and disciplines which, if pursued, could enrich the literature and promise new avenues for future research.

4. Exploring Value Co-Destruction Process in Customer Interactions with AI-Powered Mobile Applications

   Mobile applications have emerged as important touchpoints for addressing service requests and optimizing human resources. Within the service industry, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these applications has enabled the inference of product demand, provision of personalized service offers, and enhancement of overall firm value. Customers now engage with these apps to stay informed, seek guidance, and make purchases. It is important to recognize that the interactive and human-like qualities of AI can either foster the co-creation of value with customers or potentially lead to the co-destruction of customer value. Although prior research has examined the process of value co-creation, the present study aims to investigate the underlying factors contributing to the value co-destruction process, specifically within AI-powered mobile applications. Our research employs topic modelling and content analysis to examine the value co-destruction process that occurs when customers engage with AI apps. We analyze 7,608 negative reviews obtained from eleven AI apps available on Google Play and App Store AI apps. Our findings reveal six distinct types of value - utilitarian, hedonic, symbolic, social, epistemic, and economic value - that can be co-destroyed during the process. System failure, self-threat and privacy violation are some contributing factors to this value co-destruction process. These values change over time and vary depending on the type of app. Theoretically, our findings extend the concept of value co-destruction in the context of AI apps. We also offer practical recommendations for designing an AI app in a more service-friendly way.

   The current chapter introduces the book Information Systems research in Vietnam (Volume 2), which seeks to address research opportunities in the Vietnamese environment. It introduces nine selected chapters of the book that cover diverse information systems research topics, including digital advertisements, e-commerce and brand addiction behaviours, artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the aviation industry and solar energy construction, online education effectiveness, information security awareness, potential market for elderly people, and sustainable digital transformation. The chapter further outlines the significance of sustainability in the process of digitization and argues that future IS research may aid in achieving sustainability objectives. Through the assistance of the Vietnam Chapter of the Association for Information Systems (VAIS), this book invites international scholars to conduct collaborative IS research in Vietnam.

6. Digital Transformation and Gender Representation: A Study of Service Advertisements in Vietnam

   The digital transformation in Vietnam offers new opportunities for targeted advertising, but also enables biased and stereotypical content to be delivered quickly. Digital content can greatly impact public perception of gender roles and stereotypes, leading researchers to examine gender portrayals in digital ads for service brands in Vietnam. A content analysis of 300 digital service commercials found that female characters were more prominent than male ones and were often depicted in multiple roles. However, recent ads increasingly portrayed collaboration between female and male characters, and femvertising messages were conveyed more often. Despite these positive changes, gender stereotypes in digital advertising persist. This study highlights the need for policymakers and advertising professionals to consider the impact of gender portrayals in digital ads and strive for more balanced and non-stereotypical representations.

1. Exploring the Antecedents of Shadow Information Security Practices

   Employees are both the first line of defence in organisations as well as a significant source of vulnerability. Behavioural research in information security (InfoSec) has studied compliance of employees with organisational directives. Less understood are shadow security practices - a related category of behaviour where employees invent InfoSec workarounds albeit with the intention of still complying with organisational InfoSec directives. In this research-in-progress paper, we present the theoretical development of a model, by conducting in-depth reviews of the relevant and multidisciplinary literatures, to identify the potential antecedents of the employees’ intention to perform shadow security.

2. Resource orchestration and digitalisation at a public hospital in Vietnam

   To provide better treatment and quality of service to patients and customers, healthcare organisations have increased their efforts of digital transformation to benefit from the implementation of digital technologies. In this paper, we present an interpretive case study of digitalisation at one of the largest and most technologically advanced public hospitals in Vietnam, which has achieved its digitalisation goals and thus succeeded in their digital transformation effort. We adopt the resource orchestration theory as a theoretical lens to guide our analysis. Based on qualitative data comprising interviews with key informants and organisational documents, we identify the resource orchestration activities, as well as the enabling conditions of these activities that contributed to the digitalisation outcome.

3. Examining authenticity on digital touchpoint: a thematic and bibliometric review of 15 years’ literature

   The role of customers has moved from reactive to proactive, and they require more control over digital touchpoints. The quest for authenticity is their response to the dark side of interactive marketing forms of faking, manipulation and exploitation. Authenticity becomes a key topic in interactive marketing as it reflects how customers assess digital touchpoints. However, there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge of authenticity in the interactive environment. This article consolidates the authenticity studies in various digital touchpoints using the entity-referent correspondence framework. This research employs bibliometric analysis and thematic analysis of 103 articles in the last 15 years. Five research clusters are identified: (1) human, (2) brand-generated content, (3) user-generated content, (4) branded platforms and (5) new technologies-based touchpoints (artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality). Most interactive marketing studies focus on human and content authenticity, and new technologies-based touchpoints lack comprehensive conceptualization. The review synthesizes the types of authenticity used in each touchpoint and highlights the importance of true-to-creator-self and true-to-customer-self in customer evaluation. We further propose a research framework with four antecedent groups and outcomes. Our research supports managers by highlighting the type of authenticity prioritized in each touchpoint’s development. To answer the call from interactive marketing researchers, this research highlights the distinct definitions of authenticity at various digital touchpoints rather than looking at the overall brand. Trends, gaps and future research agenda of the authenticity concept in technology adoption and customer behavior are discussed.

   The transmission of informational privacy has become a fertile ground for debate among competing actors affected by the proliferation of information communication technologies. Contexts are among the factors that shape the flow of informational privacy. The existing discussion however has been mainly dominated by perspectives from the Global North and the able-bodied. In response, based on interview data collected from people with disabilities (PwD) living in Vietnam, this study offers the continuum of context in informational privacy transmissions as a concept to illuminate the types, the levels, and the interest of the transmission and the capability of PwD to manage the flow of their informational privacy. The concept has the potential to enrich the existing discussion by providing more nuance and dynamic of informational privacy transmissions situated in the Global South and among groups who have been historically marginalized.

   The inconsistent implementation of disability rights in crisis responses such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated the double difficulty that persons with disabilities (PwD) must face. Ableism remains the basis for pandemic responses, leading to a range of irrationalities in collecting and using disability data during critical times. This commentary identifies situational and contextual rationalities in disability data collection and use in Global South. Through vignettes from Indonesia and Vietnam, this commentary illuminates the socio-technical and cultural infrastructure that perpetuates the obscurity of disability rights in the pandemic responses in, respectively, the largest democratic and socialist-communist countries in Southeast Asia. In addition to better listening to the voice of PwD, stronger engagement of organizations of PwD in policy making and programming is advocated for enabling more equitable pandemic preparedness, response, and recovery plans to manifest in future.

   Organizations are increasingly prioritizing the management of information security (InfoSec) to facilitate their data-driven business. There are densely connected organizational networks in modern organizations, where both formal and informal leaders influence other employees’ InfoSec behaviors. We analyzed the organizational networks in a large organization and investigated the interactions that made employees appear as influential InfoSec opinion leaders to their colleagues. The findings indicate that influential InfoSec opinion leaders were perceived by colleagues as knowledgeable in InfoSec and capable of rewarding and sanctioning InfoSec behaviors. Other traits such as formal seniority, age, tenure, and department membership were also found to increase InfoSec leadership.

   While digital transformation creates opportunities across all industries, many organisations and practitioners struggle to grasp what conducting digital transformation entails and seek directions for how digital transformation programs, especially large and complex ones, can be executed. In response, recent studies have offered such directions and models for guiding digital transformation and put forward suggestions for steps and phases of digital transformation, as well as drivers, enablers, and inhibitors. Many of these proposals are based on the dynamic capabilities framework as a theoretical foundation and invite more research to develop further and/or to refine existing models for digital transformation, especially investigating how dynamic capabilities contribute to digital transformation. In this case study, we explore Digital Kaizen, a systematic approach to conduct large-scale digital transformation developed and applied at our case organisation FPT Software. This approach integrates the Kaizen philosophy into digital transformation practices that lead to digital improvements and transformation of some of the company’s human resource management processes and its business model. Our analysis and our reflections on our findings lead us to propose a novel Digital Kaizen process model for digital transformation informed by the dynamic capabilities framework.

   Investigating the diffusion of IT consumerization in the workplace: A case study using social network analysis

   IT consumerization, or the end-user’s adoption of consumer IT for work purpose, is an emerging topic which recently attracted the attention of researchers and practitioners. This research adopted social network analysis techniques to investigate the determinants of the social influence that resulted in IT consumerization, as well as the structural features of such influence’s network. By testing theoretically-based hypotheses with the exponential random graph modeling approach, our findings suggested that IT consumerization’s influence tended to occur between employees in the same department, coming especially from those who frequently gave work advice, life advice, and organizational updates to others, as well as those who were trusted for expertise by colleagues. The research revealed that IT consumerization’s influence was highly transitive, hierarchical, and non-reciprocal. The research concluded by elaborating future directions about the adoption of social network analysis techniques in technology adoption research, as well as practical recommendations about harnessing the determinants of such influence to manage IT consumerization.

   Behavioural information security (InfoSec) research has studied InfoSec at workplaces through the employees’ perceptions of InfoSec climate, which is determined by observable InfoSec practices performed by their colleagues and direct supervisors. Prior studies have identified the antecedents of a positive InfoSec climate, in particular socialisation through the employees’ discussions of InfoSec-related matters to explain the formation of InfoSec climate based on the employees’ individual cognition. We conceptualise six forms of socialisation as six networks, which comprise employees’ provisions of (1) work advice, (2) organisational updates, (3) personal advice, (4) trust for expertise, (5) InfoSec advice, and (6) InfoSec troubleshooting support. The adoption of a longitudinal social network analysis (SNA), called stochastic actor-oriented modelling (SAOM), enabled us to analyse the changes in the socialising patterns and the InfoSec climate perceptions over time. Consequently, this analysis explains the forming mechanisms of the employees’ InfoSec climate perceptions as well as their socialising process in greater detail. Our findings in relation to the forming mechanisms of InfoSec-related socialisation and InfoSec climate, provide practical recommendations to improve organisational InfoSec. This includes identifying influential employees to diffuse InfoSec knowledge within a workplace. Additionally, this research proposes a novel approach for InfoSec behavioural research through the adoption of SNA methods to study InfoSec-related phenomena.

   As organisations are developing people-centric security workplaces, where proactive security behaviours are fostered, it is important to understand more about the sources of security influence. This research applied social network analysis methods to investigate security influence within a large interior contractor in Vietnam. The findings revealed that security influence occurs between employees in the same department, particularly those in senior positions, have longer tenure or younger age. Engagement in daily work and security-related activities can also increase the likelihood of influencing security behaviours. Moreover, the security influence network is transitive and has a hierarchical structure.

   Malware have been regarded as a persistent threat to both individuals and organisations due to its wide spread via various means of infection. With the increasing use of personal mobile devices and the trending adoption of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) practices, this threat has become even more versatile and dreadful as it could hide behind the users’ typical and daily Internet activities. The importance of investigating whether the user’s intention to perform malware avoidance behaviours would change across multiple contexts is emphasised. Consequently, this study determines the contributing factors and compares their impacts on such intention by extending Protection Motivation Theory in two different contexts. A total of 252 Australian higher education students were surveyed when using mobile devices such as smartphone, laptop and tablet at home and at a BYOD-enabled university. Paired t-test, Bayesian structural equation modelling, and revised z-test were employed for data analysis. The empirical findings reveal that intention to perform malware avoidance behaviours differed across the contexts. Furthermore, the researchers found perceptions of self-efficacy and vulnerability to have different impacts on such intention and other variables in the model. As a result, such findings suggested developing community of practice and repeated trainings to maintain the users’ confidence in their own abilities to cope with malware threats. Message that focuses on the threats’ consequences was suggested to improve home users’ intention to avoid malware, along with a number of factors that could be critical to designing information security education programs. Moreover, these implications particularly address information security management at educational institutions that adopt BYOD policy. Finally, theoretical contributions include an extended model based on Protection Motivation Theory that reflects the users’ intention to avoid malware threats in BYOD context, from which directions for future research were also provided.
